Motorola RAZR2 V9m Verizon – Review
This is Phone Arena’s video review of the new Motorola RAZR2 V9m for Verizon Wireless. The RAZR2 V9m is a completely new design and has several features not found before in previous RAZR models. The phone is remarkably thin measuring only 12 mm thick and has a weight of just over 4 grams. It is constructed out of stainless steel with a glossy finish on the flip and also on the keypad. But it has a soft touch finish on the back similar to the Q9m Smartphone.
The exterior of the phone features a large 2-inch QVGA display with touch sensitive buttons that activate the camera, music and voice commands. When you press the touch buttons the phone provides a slight vibration feedback to let you know that it is activating. We like the idea of the Touch buttons but were confused as to why there is a voice command button on the front of the flip and also one on the side whereas the other RAZR2 models instead can view text messages on the external display.
We feel that Verizon should have kept the ability to view text messages on the external display as Motorola intended. Look here at the top of the display is the standard 2 megapixel camera that takes quality pictures. However, there was no other focus system or flash for a little light condition. The left side of the phone has the volume rocker and Smart command button with the voice command button on the right side. None of these buttons provide vibration feedback like on the Sprint V9m.
Flipping open the phone reveals the internal 2.2-inch QVGA display. Both internal and external displays are only capable of 65,000 colors yet the GSM RAZR2 models support 262,000 colors.
We are unsure as to why Motorola did not use the same display in the all RAZR2 models. Despite this however the display is easy to view in most lighting conditions and to use pictures and text with good quality.
Since the keypad has the same glossy finished as the rest of the phone is impossible to keep clean and fingerprints are easily seen. The keys have a white backlight to them instead of the standard blue backlighting that has been used by many phones in recent years. The keypad response is good which provides for easy dialing and for text messaging. On the back of the phone is the battery cover which must be slid off to access the battery. Further more the battery itself must be removed to gain access to the microSD card.
We would have much rather seen an SD card slot on the side of the phone since this would be easier to use. Music playback can be launched the either pressing the music button on the front display or by going into the main menu then over to get it now and my music. When going through the main menu music is categorized into albums, artists and playlist. Once you select the song and music begins playback the title information is shown on both the internal and external displays.
There are also touches of playback buttons on the front for rewind, play and pause, and fast forward. We found that the music playback quality to be quite good considering the size of the phone. The only downside is that the speaker is located on the back which will muffle the sound from the furnished and the normal resting position. However, flipping the phone over easily solves its problem as small as using a Bluetooth stereo headset.
The reception and sound quality are two areas where the RAZR2 V9m shines. We found the reception to be excellent and we’re able to place and receive calls in fringe areas or other phones such as the LG Chocolate can not. The call quality through the ear piece speaker was also excellent. Most of it sounded clear and natural and are easily heard with no noticeable static or interference. Because of this we rate the reception and call quality on the V9m to be one of the best that we have tested on the Verizon phone equal to that of the Samsung A990.
We are quite pleased with your experience with the RAZR2 V9m. The phone is attractively stylish and it’s remarkably thin with an external display that is one of the largest that we have seen or any Flip phone. We also denied encounter any of the numerous software glitches that plagued the Sprint V9m model.
The reception and call quality are both topnotch and should not be overlooked. The RAZR2 V9m correctly sits atop the Verizon prize hierarchy at $249.00 after rebate. This may ward off some consumers but for those willing enough to dish out the cash they will not be disappointed.
