Motorola SURFboard eXtream Modem SB6120 - Tech Review
Bowman here at BWOne.com and I’m going to give you my review of the Motorola surfboard extreme cable modem. I now will show you what the SURFboard eXtream modem is. It is one of the new modems out there. They now support the new DOCSIS 3.0 standard from a cable provider if they provide it to allow you to get faster speeds above the 150 megahertz per second through the internet.
So let’s get started with the review and start up with the accessories first. It doesn’t come with too much. First accessory here is an Ethernet cable. It comes with the CD, the drivers and all documentation and the AC adopter right here. Now for the accessories, now we can go right on to the modem itself and take a look here at the front to our black and it’s got vented holes inside of each. You can actually see the circuit board inside of it as well and right here on the side is where your lights are. You have the power, receives, send online and link and on the side looks the same and on the back you have your power, your coaxial and this is actually now a gigabit Ethernet port.
So that’s pretty much the modem all around. It’s pretty light, pretty lightweight, it stands up like that. You can also lay it down as well but I recommend standing it up obviously and it’s keep it ventilated and that’s pretty much the tool of the modem right there, so the next thing I’m going to do is I’m going to hook this modem and get it set up and test some speed to see what the increase of speed that you would expect from the Motorola Surfboard eXtream modem.
Okay we have the modem setup, ready to go with and figure with the ISP which is Comcast and this one is speed test and the plan that we have on for DOCSIS 3.0 is up to 30 megabit on a download and up to 70 megabit on the upload speed so let’s see what we get. Okay for the speed we got about 31megabits going on a download and upload is about 9.31 megabits so it’s a little bit above average on both sides at 30 is about the 30 megabits exactly on a download and it’s actually up a little bit higher and the upload speed instead of the up to 7 megabits is about 9 megabits so that is getting a bit of an advantage there.
But obviously this all depends upon what time you do it and what services that you’re doing it from so obviously if you’re uploading and downloading from a further disks and it’s depending on what type of connection they have and what service they are using it could vary on the speeds but it looks like it’s the real deal and you’re getting the speeds that you’re looking for and I’ve even varied that. I’ve got upload speeds of as low as maybe 6 and then I’ve gotten as high as 12 and the same thing for the download. Sometimes the download is about 28, sometimes the download goes through about 33 but that stays a little more consistent around the 30 to 31 mark.
So this is definitely the real you do for this modem. It’s very stable and I don’t get any random drop connections. The nice advantage of this is that it is, is that even if the cable provided us and support DOCSIS 3.0 this is 2.0 compatible so as you to prove so if you’re in a market to buy a new modem you can buy this modem through your cable provider and you can use it. It all supports the DOCSIS 2.0 standard and then when you’re cable provider upgrades set the DOCSIS 3.0 you’ll be able to use this modem. You already be all set and you don’t have to buy a new modem.
So this is definitely a modem I recommend. It is easy to plug in and set up as far as for the ISP since it’s suit a new DOCSIS 3.0. It can be hard to configure it with their ISP a little bit because it’s newer technology so it might take you a little while to kind of work with the customer service to get them to set it up on there. You don’t need to have any technician come out to install it. You just have to have them externally provision right on there in. That can be a little bit tricky like I say because it’s such a new technology. Well, it’s a new technology out there so have a little bit of patience when doing that but anyways this is a highly recommended modem. I would definitely go for if you're in the market for a new one.
