One of the most well known volcanoes in the worlds is located here, not far from the bay of Naples in Italy’s West Coast Mount Vesuvius has erupted numerous times over the centuries most famously in AD 79 when it destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is the only volcano the European mainland to have erupted during the last million years. Two other active Italian volcanoes Etna and Stromboli both in a state of almost continual eruption around islands, Vesuvius last eruption began on the 13th of March 1944 and lasted on and off until the 29th of March. Italy was a divided country at the time.
One of Natsy Germany’s main allies in the Second World War the country had finally surrendered to the allied forces the previous September. Germany had immediately invaded, reinstating the Fiascoes Leader Benito Mussolini in the North of the Country when Italian pantheisms aided by the allies wage to fear civil war from itself. Allied troupes were stationary for Vesuvius with the volcanoes observing is that much logical station. This meant that the observatory director who sent the email had only one room from which to observe the volcanoes changing paints.
According with the eruption it occurring everyone by surprise including the military, thousands of people fled their homes and 26 people were killed, a few of the casualties were cause by the explosion of a water tank hit by lava. The mountain side villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Ottaviano, Massa di Somma were all but destroyed. As well as part of San Giorgio a Cremano and all 88 claims in the US B-52 Bombardment Group station at the airport of Tasunio to the east of the mountain.
The sequence of the eruption was similar to earlier ones from 1631 onward it began with an emission of lava flow, followed by powerful lava fountains and it comminuted in explosive stage featuring it's sustain eruption power. The comparatively low number of casualties now was because the destruction is cause more by the lave flows than the explosive activity. Because it's leading Volcanologist Professor Bill McGuire of the University of College London ones pointed out you have to be nailed to the floor to be killed by lava even you move so slowly.
In fact in San Sebastiano village boys were recording Western Chestnuts on the lava flow as the village past. Since 1944 is something we rebuilt the area is dense populated with local drown to the rich and fertile volcanic soil on the mountain. Considering part in 1944 its cycle of prior periods varied from 18 months to seven and a half years meaning destruction is not in for the volcano the longest in nearly five million years it does seems that the volcanoes wanted the due for another eruption.
It is not thought that Vesuvius is due erupting in the near future however, though it's tendency towards sudden and extreme violent explosions from the dense population on and near the mountain is a continual challenge for authorities waiting on efficient evacuation plans. Poetically the plan relays on the authorities receiving between two weeks and 20 days notice of an eruption before using trains, ferries, cars and vessels to remove some 600,000 people living within the so called Somma-Vesuvio that leads on the old observatory used by allied troupes in 1944 is now a museum and the volcano is closely monitored by a brand new facility make of it. So far there has been no magma discovery within 10 kilometers of the earth surface.
