Jennifer: Christine Saldivar was born with a cleft palate.
Female: When he was born that’s what I noticed. It was terrible fro me.
Jennifer: Surgery helped his appearance but not his speech. Well he still has worked to do a simple therapy as helped and improved and it has him singing.
Female Speaker: You can see while he stands, he was having problem now he likes to talk a lot.
Jennifer: Music therapy has long been used for behavioral problems now Ellis orthopedic hospital is using it to help kids with cleft palate.
Libby Wilson: Many children who have difficulty with speech are very redescent to interact with other individuals. Music therapy makes interacting with other people fun
Jennifer: In the one of the kind program music therapist Laurel Terreri does exercises that target problems unique to cleft palates.
Laurel Terreri: We use a lot of strengthening activities like blowing into the sort of facility the movement of air from the lungs at the mouth.
