Host: What is an appropriate song choice for musical audition?

Jennifer Rutherford: If you pick something that is so signature tune by a big artist, you’re just going to sound like you missed the mark. If you don’t pick anything as they say risky enough, then you can’t show what you’ve got.

You’ve got to pick something that you really know really well that’s in your own style, in your own range of capability, something that you know so well that you can put a few ornaments in there and you can just sing it without thinking twice because your nerves are going to kick in when you’re at that audition and you really need to know your stuff. You need to pick something about 16 bars of a piece that’s very familiar to you, something that has some varying dynamics that maybe starts out a little soft to show that you can sing softly and then builds up to a nice climax so that you can show them how powerfully you can sing. That’s basically it. So that’s how I’d pick a song.
