On occasion, everybody who owns a house has to hang a little accessory on the wall, either a smoke detector, or a bathroom accessory. I have some favorite anchors for dry wall. I’ll show you what they are. Let’s get to work.
Here are some examples of some plastic anchor kits that I purchased at my local hardware store and these are also what comes in some packages of things that I had to anchor on the wall. Where the plastic anchors may work very well on a very hard surface, such as concrete or cinder block or maybe even a thick hard plaster. I’ve had very little luck with the plastic anchors when it comes to putting them in dry wall. There’s just not enough meat in the gypsum to keep them from spinning. So I wouldn’t use any of these in a dry wall, hollow wall type situation and whether there’s no stud behind the wall to screw into it.
My favorite anchor for all time is the easy anchor, it’s made by Buildex. It comes in a couple of different sizes; it’s self drilling, it has very large threads on the shaft to this anchor which is about the only way that I can actually hold on the dry wall. Gypsum and dry walls are real powdery when you disturb it but these large threads seem to be able to do the job.
One of my favorite features about this type of anchor is its self-drilling so you don’t need to go get a drill bit, and it also has a Philips head tip that ride into it. So if you take your screw gun which fits right into the tip of the anchor, you put it where you want to go. The anchor will actually drill its own hole until it comes up to the threads.
Now here’s the important part, when you screw this in, screw it in slowly. If you have a variable speed drill just chit it down just a little tap at a time until it flashes up with the dry wall. Then go ahead and take your screw. And right in the same hole that you used to put the anchor in, go ahead and take the screw that comes with it, and run it into the hole also.
I’ve had extremely good luck with these, they hold very well for tow bars, or fire smoke detectors or anything along the like. They come in different sizes because a lot of times in a bath accessory, you’ll have three holes that are very close together. And I’ve had real good luck with putting three of them real tight together and it makes for a real strong hole.
So there you go, the easy anchor. I never leave home without at least a couple of different sizes of these in my truck because you’ll never know exactly what’s going to come up or you might need.
