Donnie: I think a lot of Linebackers be it high school, be it college, be it the NFL
because I don’t think linebackers focus a lot on catching the ball. Seeing
the ball in your hands and catching for some reason all linebackers have
brick hands. You know, and in order to make plays you got to be able to
catch the ball and not just catch the ball, you got to score. Those things
that I think, I don’t think about just getting interceptions-. I think getting
interceptions and scoring. I want the whole escalade on everything.
But in order to get interception is you got to have good footwork, you
have that good instincts and you have to have eyes. Good eyes,
anticipation and break on quarterback and get footwork. So some of the
drills I like to do is like footwork drills in association with catching the
football, a one little drill basically you’re going to back pedal. Simple so
I’m going to get you like a direction like straight back.
This and then either you break to the right or you break to the left on me
so by sending it back and I face this way, I want you to break and go that
way and then catch the ball. Really simple right, but you will be surprised
on how many people when they like break you know what I mean and
their footwork is all out of whack. They step in a bucket, they come out
here and they step on intercepts and then they stop here versus back
propelling and planting that foot here and then going.
Now plant roll of the front foot, I don’t know what your coaches teaches
you about breaking stuff but I always break by trying to get all my cleats
to the ground and all the seven studs in the ground by a liner back pedal a
lot of guys they just take their toe in the ground like this and that’s not
really good in all of your foot in the ground in front of break.
What I try to do is when I back pedal. I try to plant and get all my cleats in
the ground and push off and roll over my front foot on my other leg. So
I’m pushing over and then I’m back over here this way. You understand.
Go!
There you go!
Hooks on passing the ball, seeing the ball in your hands, seeing the ball in
your hands and the way we do it on my team when you drop the ball. It’s
10 push ups. Seriously drop the ball again there’s money and pushups.
When you see guys in the sideline don’t push him the game it’s kind of
funny.
Hut!
There you go, catch the ball with your hands, catch the ball with your
hands.
There we go, set, go!
Good catch great catch.
