Female: Many women say they are familiar with common bladder conditions yet a survey reveals one painful condition that is barely recognized. It is called interstitial cystitis or IC.
Dr. Minkin: IC is indeed often mistaken for other better known conditions such as urinary tract infections or overactive bladder because the symptoms can be very similar. In fact for many women with IC, it can take up to four years before they get an accurate diagnosis.
Female: IC is a chronic condition in which the bladder wall becomes irritated and inflamed. Symptoms include pain in the pelvis, bladder, back or thighs. The need to go to the bathroom frequently or urgently or pain during or after intercourse, due to frequent misdiagnosis, many people with IC maybe suffering needlessly.
Dr. Minkin: IC can become very debilitating. If women are experiencing these symptoms and they are not resolved despite treatment, for example, if they keep having urinary tract infections and antibiotics do not offer relief, it may be IC and they should see and IC specialist.
