Natural Antidepressants

Lenn: Hi! My name is Lenn. I am 33 years old. I am from Denver, Colorado. I was wondering if there is any natural alternative to prescription Antidepressants.

Richard Lord: Lenn that's a very common question, as many folks are looking for other alternatives from prescription antidepressants. In the United States, there are two very commonly available herbs; one is St. John's wort, and the other is SAMe that are available for treating depression. St. John's wort is very effective, however it does have many drug interactions, and you certainly would want to talk to your physician if you are taking other medications, prior to using St. John's wort. SAMe has less interactions with medications, but it’s much more expensive, it can run up to $200 a month to treat it. So we would encourage you to talk to your physician about these options, and certainly they can be a good alternative to prescription medications.
