I wish medical doctors would refrain from saying that there is no research proving a "natural" product works for this or that. They just do not read all the research and then say there is none.There is published research by an Israeli scientist showing that black elderberry extract can lessen the course of a flu. For years I have been successfully using that and Chinese herbal formulas (Yin Chaio) to significantly shorten the duration of a flu. Flu shot only work if the manufacturer guessed the correct strain of virus that will be spread around the following year.

I am glad to hear that you are interested in preventing the flu because it's surely a nasty illness. It results in a lot of lost productivity and time away from family and friends, and is quite contagious. I think the best way to prevent the flu is to wash your hands frequently and to consider getting a flu shot. There are a lot of herbs and supplements out there which have been shown at least in test tubes to help stimulate your immune system and maybe have some antibacterial properties, but there really haven't been any clinical trials of herbs, homeopathic or folk remedies for this flu specifically. So I would rely on the good standby measures of good hand hygiene, taking good care of yourself if you do get the flu and then perhaps consider seeing your physician if you do get the flu as there are some new medications out there which can shorten the duration of your symptoms.
