Allow me to tell you about one of the most fascinating insects in the world, the Dreaded Cicada Killer.
No, that is not a Cicada Killer right there. That is just an ordinary wasp.
That illusive insect is a Cicada Killer.
The Cicada Killer like other solitary wasp has a capability to sting but would not unless handled or threatened. And by the way, only the female wasp had the ability to sting.
Wasps by the way are generally the beneficial and will usually nests in out the way location where there not like to be disturbed, and this should be left alone.
Female Cicada Killer wasp capture annual Cicada’s in July and August and placed them in cells located at the ends of tunnel they have dug in the ground.
Each tunnel is about the size of as quarter and extends 24 inches or more into the ground.
These mounts are called cells. One or two paralyzed Cicada’s are placed in each cell and a single egg deposited before the cell is closed by the female who flies away never to return.
Let us observe this beautiful insect, this Cicada Killer.
