Nina Sebastiane: We all know that getting your baby off to sleep can be an absolute nightmare. 16 years ago, a Nature's Nest was launched in Australia and since then it's been building up a steady stream of dedicated fans. Parents, I am sure who speak of it as a miracle device which is saved their months of sleepless nights. Joining me in the studio is Chloe Mallows from Nature's Nest and Kerry Sizemore and of course Jack who is in the Nature's Nest enjoying himself. Now this sounds too good to be true Chloe, tell me about it.
Chloe Mallows: Well, basically the idea of the Nature's Nest is to create a womb like effect for babies, rather than being in a womb for nine months, the movements, emotions they feel, mother is happy, all those sort of things and then they born up on to basically a flat hard wide open space for our bed, which I don't think is really realistically expect to newborn babies. Given the change in environment. So this was actually designed specifically for babies rather than a miniature adult bed if you like. So the whole idea is to have a bed that is much more tactile which is why it's more narrow than other beds. It gives them some feel, some sense of security. It's suspended by a spring which you can say under this cloth --
Nina Sebastiane: This looks to me like hammock for babies.
Chloe Mallows: Yes, it is.
Nina Sebastiane: And obviously Kerry, tell us a bit about your story, because this quite interesting just reading through the notes, Jack wasn't very happy when you brought him to hospital.
Kerry: No, he was a nightmare in hospital and he wouldn't sleep at all -- so I think they have to at least to take him away from me at night, so that I can try and sleep but that didn't work and we brought a car bed thinking, money is a big tight, we will utilize it and will have it five years, not right, didn't want to know.
Nina Sebastiane: Just was exactly.
Kerry: We would not set like to - we wouldn't even, you could lay him in it. He'd sleep two or three minutes and up he is wake up screaming, that was there. We then bought a moses basket which he'd, maybe he spend an hour in downstairs in the afternoon, that wasn't nothing. We then bought Simmons crib and he --
Nina Sebastiane: I think mother care probably, do exactly guys.
Kerry: Yeah, absolutely. And for seven weeks he slept in our bed. But he woke every hour, and need to feed. I breastfeed him as well. Then you feed, you go wait for an hour and I was down with a virus and then the my mom came over and I finally picked up parenting -- my brother is in hospital and I saw that.
Nina Sebastiane: He is looking like he is -- I think he is enjoying there, why can you just given him a swing. He is quite happy. So it's that what you do.
Kerry: Absolutely. He just would be fine and then go to sleep.
Nina Sebastiane: And what do you find is happen then, I mean you put it in, you saw rocking and is this suppose to recreate the kind of movement.
Chloe Mallows: Sure. I mean this is why babies fall asleep in the car. There are no ways fall asleep in the pram, they don't always fall asleep in the bed unfortunately, so parents don't --
Nina Sebastiane: He was trying to --
Chloe Mallows: The movement, yeah, it's all about the movements and the motions. And you know parents are always pacing up and down the floor, patting the back bouncing and again, that's not - to bounce, made a movement. As soon as you sit down with the baby, they start, so they basically need that movement.
Nina Sebastiane: If you need to be mom's TLC, you feel free to grow up, and - absolutely, absolutely, make sure he is happy in there. So essentially this will carry him for how long?
Chloe Mallows: Up to approximately 12 months. We say approximately, because it is actually going to bound to the baby's weight, 29 pound. We often find that girls will staying there for an extra couple of months, so they are generally smaller. So that every baby is going to vary, but 29 pounds is around a 12 months.
Nina Sebastiane: We are just going to get, we are going to get Jack back. Suppose he is missing his mom. So what is this retail at.
Chloe Mallows: Then a 149.99 and the good thing about it as well was it -- So pushing, there are pushing slot tubes, all you need to do is tight the two tubes right from the bottom. The bed just collapses down and it comes with its own carry case. You don't need to travel.
Nina Sebastiane: So you --
Kerry: We just take it over with, if we are going, they were always saying, why don't you just take it down. We went away last week, just stay with the neighbor we just put it in its bag, took it next door, put it up again.
Nina Sebastiane: Essentially, you'd looking a 150 Quid, and you found that for that price obviously you got sleep. So what price is sleep I suppose complete --
Kerry: I do pay that for the one night. I didn't -- but Chris say, we can have one, and I want to bought anyway and he came home and looks like what's that? Six hours that's night. Six hours and now he sleeps between nine and twelve hours a night.
Nina Sebastiane: He looks absolutely glorious on it. He obviously looks very happy and doing very well on it. So tell me a little bit more about the history behind. You say it's come from Australia.
Chloe Mallows: Yeah, it's invented in Australia and we brought it to the -- I had my child four years ago. He is coming up to four now and he wouldn't sleep, bit lacks of caring. First time mom is quite daunting, very scary and not really what you want as expected to be. He was terrible. Really bad. And my sister-in-law to get upon self to buy one of these from America and I have to say, when it was - it was very much sort of wanting for my baby in that. But after one night the same story is coming really, he don't wakes that night, and that was -- converted and when it came to sort of, how you got to about four months older. It's kind of time to be think about work again and I really didn't -- didn't really want to go about, to be honest, many parents don't.
So I decided to go for this. So we got the distribution rights, brought it to UK and it's doing really, really well. The last two years have been fabulous and we do find as well. The thing with it is that, we have so many stories like Kerry's, a lot mine. We usually find, it's usually second-time moms to get these. I think it's because I remember, so it's fist time when I look for an alternative. The first time moms don't buy them, we didn't having first time mom buy them, but again then with Kerry, they buy this, they buy that, they buy the moses basket and nothing worked and they are really looking for something that's going to help.
Nina Sebastiane: I just need advice.
Chloe Mallows: Sure, yeah, I think, that sleep deprivation so spoils your first few months with your only baby. I mean they are so precious, they go so quick. Then you know you really need to enjoy every minute and you can't do that. You feel so tired all the time.
Nina Sebastiane: So you can buy these, are these in the shops?
Chloe Mallows: They are not in shops at the moment, no. Because they are -- although we have been here for four years. People still really don't know enough about them and the most part people who buy them, buy them because if a friend to use them, a sister or whatever that she has done. So they get all recommendation because they know that work.
Nina Sebastiane: It's worked. And people should know that it's online.
Chloe Mallows: Yes, it is online.
Nina Sebastiane: So you liked it so much, you bought the company.
Chloe Mallows: Yeah, never looked back --
Nina Sebastiane: And you liked it so much you got a nice sleep.
Kerry: Absolutely.
Nina Sebastiane: And essentially what you've done is, if you put in your bedroom, if you put in his nursery.
Kerry: It's in our bedroom. It's at the end of the bed. He'll wake up in the morning and he would lay there for an hour before he says -- my breakfast. Then I think from when he is six months, he will going to his room, but I just would like him to stay in our room to six months.
Nina Sebastiane: Fantastic. Ladies, thank you very much for coming in and talking about Nature's Nest with us. It is like a fantastic looking thing. Does in come in adults size -- as they can relax in it. Thank you and very best of luck with little Jack.
Kerry: Thank you.
