So now, what we are going to do is improvise a quick compass by making this simple needle float on top of the water.
Now to do that, any sewing needle would work, a standard refrigerator magnet, we are going to strike it a couple of times, like this. Same direction, all the time, and we have a magnet. I am going to lay that aside.
Standard Scotch toilet paper, and now we are going to nestle the needle into the toilet paper, and I will have a needle burrito, and hopefully, this will work. [Demonstration]
The water is absorbed in the tissue. The tissue will inevitably sink. The needle would become an instant compass, operating on the surface tension of the water, pointing North-South without fail, everytime.
The lighter side of the needle—in this case, the eye—will point north. And you can have fun with this by playing with it with the magnet.
So, you can make it spin and dance, as long as it does not touch the side too much—oops! There you go.
