New Jersey Quilt Block
Did you know that the week of July 5th that is time we start celebrating “Be Nice to New Jersey Week?” I don’t either but it is out there, so it must be true. So, I decided to sew the New Jersey Quilt Block together in honor of “Be Nice to New Jersey Week.” This block is pretty easy to sew and I am going to use a strip sewing technique. This is Penny Halgren, from Quiltblocklibrary.com and Quiltblocklibrary.TV. Thanks for joining me.
And I have got strips cut out in the colors of New Jersey. So let us go over to the sewing machine. One visit to the New Jersey website showed me that there are state colors were buff which I kind of using this golden color and blue. And this is the blue that I have chosen for the block. Now, I got two pairs of strips sewn together.
So I have got the bottom with blue and bottom is blue. I am going to sew this two units together and then I am going to sew another buff strip onto the end of this blue. Now that once of strips sewn together and I am going to sew another set of strips that has blue yellow, blue yellow blue on it.
Now, I have my units of strips and what I need to do is just cut down into triangles so that I can sew them together in order to get the patches to make a block. So, I know the colors are a little bit different here, but basically in this unit I’ve got the light dark, light dark, light. And so, I need four of those to go around. So, using my rotary cutter, I am going to cut pieces of it and cut out a 3 to5 degree angle with the point being, or it could be on this side too because either way the point that light needs to be a corner piece.
So, I am going to line up my grid line here and then cut down this way and that will give me the first cut of the triangle. And I will fit my ruler over and line it up so that my grid line is matching the right edge of this and the corner of the ruler is matching a point and we will cut that off. And then I can separate that.
So then all I need to do is continue on down. And this, because of the way, they are set up, are going to be usable going in both directions, so I need four of these and I need four triangles out of this other unit. So I will go ahead and cut those. Now, that my triangles are cut and so it is time to lay these out but I need to sew them together. So the first thing I will do is put these triangles with the blue points surrounding the center and then these go on the outside to complete the square in each one of these corners.
So the first thing I am going to do is sew these triangles together to complete the corner patches. Now that each one of these corners sewn, and all I need to do is put the patches together. So I will put this right side together and I am going to change, sew this and then all I have to do is do the center seam on the block and it will be finished.
Now, I got these two sewn together and all I need to do is sew the final seam down the start of the block. Our New Jersey Quilt Block is all finished and ready for a quilt. So be nice to New Jersey this week.
