Night Thirst Causes

Linda: Hi, I live in State of Mass. My name is Linda McCormick, I am 50 years old. I am always waking up in the middle of the night thirsty. Would anyone know what would be causing it?

Stephen Scott: That's a great question Linda. Unfortunately thirst can be a sign or a symptom of several problems, it can also be just a normal phenomena. So I would start by saying it's probably best to speak with your physician about the specific symptom and so that they can look at the bigger picture and hopefully come up with a better answer. But in general our thirst can be a very benign issue or may be a simple matter of not drinking enough before bed time, so the dehydration would be there. It can also be due to a different food that you take, that can cause increase in urination and therefore some dehydration effect, and may be due to water pills which are prescribed sometimes for hypertension and other medical issues. One thing that in general, thirst can be a sign of diabetes and so I think that would be something to discuss again with your doctor to a lot more serious type of issues.
