Equipment News
Male: Hi and welcome to Golf a Lot Equipment News where we review the Nike
Victory Red and Sling Shot HL range of irons. There are 3 models in the
VR or Victory Red range of irons from Nike and they are aimed at each
level of golfer.
Tiger: Victory Red signifies something that is near giving red and what I wear on
Sunday and Victory the ultimate goal.
Male: The Nike Victory Red Irons are a deep full cavity iron with a deep sole
and a thick top profile. The addition of moderate offset gives the mid to
high handicap golfer extra forgiveness and confidence. The club head is
made from 4-3-1 stainless steel to allow for greater feel than the more
commonly used 17-4 stainless steel. The higher launch trajectory
combined with a softer landing is provided thanks to the center of gravity
being moved further back in the club.
The Nike Victory Red iron is used of perimeter waiting means the moment
of inertia is increased to give more forgiveness on miss hits. The Nike
Victory Red Irons are cast irons but the feel of them is remarkably good.
They were very forgiving across the face and unusually for these types of
irons the trajectory was not too high. This means the longer irons could be
blended with a split cavity version of the irons if required. The main
difference compared to the split cavity irons is the top line of the club is a
little thicker and there is a greater offset in the hosel to allow for more
forgiveness. We find them very pleasing to the eye and a joy to hit.
So if you’re a mid team handicapper, then these are well worth trying out.
If you are a mid to lower handicapper then we think you will like the Nike
Victory Red forged split cavity irons. These irons are the hybrid version of
the victory red irons and they offer everything you would expect from a
better players iron. They have a little more offset and a slightly wider sole
and top line from the Nike Victory Red TW blades which allows them to
deliver the option of shaping and working irons plus also increasing the
forgiveness offered by placing the center of gravity behind the sweet spot.
Tiger: Forged half cavity is a little more forgiving than mine. You can be able to
get the ball up in the air a little bit easier than my blade. Off center hits
sort of fly with more distance, the great thing about it is it is forged and do
have a feel of the blade but also the forgiveness of a half cavity.
Male: As they are forged irons, the feel was excellent and the clean lines of the
club head give you a little classy look and feel. The forgiveness of the split
cavity irons was much better than the blades as you would expect but the
trajectory was very good and it was easy to shoot shots as required. Nike
have really stepped up to deplete with the Nike Victory Red Forged Split
Cavity Irons and provided better players with a real alternative to the
ranges from the classic forge manufacturers.
As you would expect from the name the making Victory Red forged TW
blade iron has been designed to offer the little handicapper the precision
they crave. The clubs have been designed with direct input from Tiger
Woods himself and offer the control and workability that Tiger demands.
Tiger: This is my iron this is what I created. This is why I had been playing now
the consumers get to actually feel and play what I have been playing. I
don’t understand why, I love it so much.
Male: The club head is made of 1025 forged carbon steel and has a CNC milled
face and they offer a different back pad and thicker too than the original
Nike Blade. The word from Nike is that the victory red forged TW blade
is the same specification as with uses. The head design has a slightly
square tool than most traditional irons to help alignment but they perform
as well as any other blade on the market. The feel of the face of the forged
TW blade is excellent but you really need to be a seriously little handicap
golfer to get the most from these irons if the sweet spot is pretty small.
Single figured golfers should go for the Victory Red Forged Split Cavity
Irons as they offer as good performance with more forgiveness.
Complimenting the VR range is the new Victory Red Forged Wedges.
These are performance driven range that helped propel Tiger Woods to his
amazing victory in the 2008 US open. The VR wedge delivers maximum
spin for total control from any low with new Nike High Rev Grooves that
are individually milled into the club face to insure the maximum permitted
tolerances in both width and depth of grooves.
The Nike Victory Red Wedges are the next in the long line of very good
wedges from Nike. They always look classy and this model is no
exception. Developed in association of Tiger Woods, the Nike Forged
Victory Red Wedges have lovely clean lines and a heel growing that easily
allows you to open the face and play all variety of shots. The feel and spin
from the club face is excellent and in particular we really like lob wedge
which is 6 degrees of bounce so you can flip it up from tightest of lives.
Like SV wedges, the Victory Red wedge comes with an AS400 shaft a
standard rather than the more usual AS 300. This shaft is a little heavier
and you do feel this weight in the shaft of the club over the head so make
sure this is to your liking before you buy. Finally, for all you high
handicappers out there, Nike has launched the Nike SlingShot HL Mixed
Iron Sets. The 3 and 4 hybrid clubs are characterized by a low deep profile
where the weight is positioned low and back in the club head top make it
easier to get the ball in the air plus a—sole design increases playability for
both rough and the fairway. The slingshot HL hybrid also feature increase
offset making it easier for the player to square the hybrid at impact
resulting in straighter shots.
In the irons from 5 to sand wedge, Nike has introduced a variable sole
width and progressive offsets and has elongated the club profile. We were
big fans of the Slingshot 4D irons and this latest development has evolved
into great hybrids into the set under the Slingshot irons of the handicap
range. Compared to the 4D irons the HL range is a lot chunkier and the
extra weight at the back of the club certainly gets the ball up in a nice high
flight. The 3 and 4 hybrids look more like small Fairway Woods than
hybrid irons but that’s not a criticism as they too are very easy to hit.
So if you need a forgiving set that gets the ball airborne then the Nike
Slingshot HL set is definitely worth a try. That’s all for now so for more
