(cont.) Once you've got some software, open it and familiarize yourself with the layout and the tools. Look in all the menus, see what tricks are up its sleeve. Then, give yourself a quick little editing assignment: shoot some footage of your dog (or cat?) and make a little short film with music and maybe even some still images and transitions... Then start cutting! It's really the best way to learn. Figure out the process one step at a time, from beginning to end. Trouble importing your footage? google it. Don't know how to do a star-wipe? Google it. In no time, you'll have the basics down for whatever program you happen to be using, which means you'll have the basics down for most other non-linear editing programs you come across... For real! Just do it, and you'll pick it up in no time! Barring that, maybe get one of your editor friends to spend an afternoon showing you what to do. You'll soon see how simple it really is. Hope this helps, and good luck in NYC!

Googled non linear editing and here I am. Been doing film/tv and video production for over 25 years. Other than editing tape to tape I have always hired editors for non linear editing. D-Day has arrived and I have an opportunity to work with a well known network in NYC. I have all the confidence in my shooting style and camera work but need to learn non linear editing FAST! Any suggestions to programs, software, help guides, practice programs, etc? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John
