Normal Memory Loss Vs Alzheimer's Disease

Jeanie: Hi! My name is Jeanie from Winter Haven, Florida. And I would like to ask, What is the difference between someone with normal memory losses versus someone with Alzheimer’s?

Stuart Zola: Jeanie, it’s often a question that people have, do I have Alzheimer’s or don’t I? And they focus on things like forgetting and they will often over emphasize an episode of forgetting which is really in most cases fairly benign, that is it’s not a symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease. If you are forgetting where you put your car keys occasionally, that is not a good example or that’s not the kind of thing that we worry about in terms of Alzheimer’s Disease. But if you have some consistent kinds of problems that begin to accumulate like missing appointments or forgetting certain events or not being able to recall episodes that have happened, that of course is much more tell tale and something that you ought to look into further.
