Normal Weight Gain During Pregnancy
Weight gain is a area that is a touchy subject. I would say that the average is 27 to 30 pounds in
an average patient’s weight that comes in at their first visit.
We say that you should gain less if you are overweight or obese and that can be anywhere from
15 to 20 pounds. If you are way underweight, the recommendation is up to 30 to 40 pounds.
Well the baby needs a proper weight gain by the mom so that the child can get all the nutrition
that baby needs. Remember, you are growing a baby from scratch and that baby is just going to
grow to six to 10 pounds in a matter of months.
So the weight gain is important. The weight goes to the baby, to the uterus, to the placenta, the
mom’s body including breasts and bones, all that increases and all that takes weight gain.
