The cuff is completely empty and flat before starting. The pulse is felt in the artery in front of the elbow. Clothing is moved up out of the way or removed. The cuff is wrapped around the arm, smooth and secured. The pulse is felt again and the stethoscope is placed on the arm where the pulse was felt.

The bulb is squeezed to inflate the cuff rapidly. 30 millimeters beyond the point where pulse is felt. The valve is then opened slightly and the manometer is allowed to decrease slowly while listening for the five korotkoff sounds. The manometer waiting at the first korotkoff sound is the systolic pressure. The reading at the fifth korotkoff sound is the diastolic pressure for adults.
