Reporter: We all takes steps to keep safe on the road, we wear seatbelts, strap our children in car seats and obey traffic laws, but few may have consider one of the most obvious dangers of all—poor visibility.
Did you know that traffic deaths are three times more likely to occur at nights that during the day. In fact each year, 2,300 pedestrians are killed in the United States due to poor driving visibility. But you can take the steps to keep your family safer, the best solution is to spend a little time thinking about a part of your car that you probably take for granted, your headlights.
Denise Champagne: Many people do not realize that they even have choices when it is comes to the car head lights. The bulb that you select impacts how far you can see at night. Premium bulbs like Silverstar Ultra are up to 50 percent brighter and increase down-the-road visibility by up to 40%.
Alfred LaSpina: Heads lights dim up to 20% overtime, so you should evaluate the headlights at least once a year.
Reporter: Always replace headlights in pairs to avoid uneven illumination which can diminish driving visibility. Consider replacing standard halogens headlights with high performance headlights that produce wider and brighter light.
Interviewee: I was amazed by how much difference upgrading my headlights made. I often drive at night and can see so much more of the road now. I really feel safer.
Reporter: Ask your auto-mechanic to check that your headlights are properly adjusted. Headlight can be knocked out of alignment by rough driving and if not properly aimed, can be distracting to other drivers. Check that all you car lights are in good working order.
Denise: And high beams.
Reporter: Ask a friend to turn on the headlights, break lights and turn signals as you walk around the outside of the car. Clean headlights help you see better at night and in poor weather conditions, choosing and maintaining your headlights are crucial to safety on the road.
