Part of our knowledge of sea floor spreading came from research done with Alvin, a submersible, able to reach some of the deeper parts of the ocean.

During this dives, the Alvin unexpectedly discovered remarkable mineral barring lava formations recently created on the ocean floor.

This underwater hot spring appears along the plate boundary.

Scientist now knows that molten rock material creating this springs if release during the ongoing separation of two plates.
