Many people ask me, how much massage oil should they use? Well, there is not one simple recipe that I can give you for everybody but I can tell you how to figure it out. Every massage situation is unique and dependent on factors like skin condition, humidity, location, type of oil, and massage style.
The three things are the most important are type of oil, massage style, and skin type. Basic rule for the oil is the heavier the oil the more you will have to use. I will personally stay away from heavy oils because they have a tendency to become sticky. I like to use pure sesame oil which can be use in all skin types regarding the massage style.
First of all, there are a lot of massage styles that do not require any lubrication with the exception of aortic massage, where you use a lot broad strokes. You will try to keep the amounts of oil to a level were can still grip the muscles. In deep tissue massage you barely use any massage oil just enough to have a little bit of lubrication, so you do not pull hairs or irritate the skin.
Regarding skin types, the skin conditions of both the masseurs and the recipient are important. Dry skin can absorb some of the oil. Oily skin might need much lubrication at all. Let me also add here, that unless you use warm oil in aortic massage or any kind of massage style.
I would not recommend applying oils straight from the container on to the skin. Mainly because if the oil is cold the recipient will tense up and have a hard time relax but also because you do not have as much control how much oil you are apply. Which means it is easier to make a mess.
If you put on to much oil by accident either use a little cloth to take some off or put some on the back of your hand which you can use later on. If you have too much oil on the recipient the muscles will start sleeping and you will not be able to perform Petrissage properly plus it is uncomfortable for the recipient.
