In this session what we’re going to take a look at is how to check for freshness of content in Google. But first, let me put this right over here and let me see. There you go. Let me see something first. There you go, that’s pretty good and that’s pretty good.
All right, anyways, hello once again. My name is Alex Centeno and welcome to another session of podcast with Merkados Interactive Partners. And if you have any questions about searching and optimization or online marketing then give us a call, send us an email, and we’ll be more than glad to help you out with that.
All right, so in this session, what we’re going to be talking about is how to check for freshness of content in Google. And this is important because one of the parameters that Google uses to determine searching and ranking is by knowing freshness of content or how fresh your content is.
So for example, if everything else is equal and Google has to decide between two sites but one site has content that is one-year-old and then the second site and again, everything else is exactly equal. And then the second site has content that is fresh or that it’s being crawled and added to the site let's say less than a month ago, then Google is going to dim that site more important and relevant than the one that updated its content one year ago and it make sense. Because since information technology changes so often and fast then it’s almost guaranteed that if you don’t update your content in any topic online for a year, then you’re going to be a little bit out of touch.
So the more frequent updates that you do to your website, that’s going to help your site rank better for particular key phrases in your site. So how do you determine that freshness of content or how do you determine how fresh is the crawling of Google in your particular site, so that’s what we’re taking note right here.
So we’re in google.com and let me see if I can zoom in right here. So we’re in google.com and what we’re doing right here is taking a look at site:hp.com alright. But before we do that, let me just check. So I want to make sure that I have the zooming property available and for that we need to go to accessibility and zoom is on, there you go. So let’s see if it works, control apple, equal, options there you go. All right, much better.
All right, so we’re taking a look at Google site right here and as you can see, well actually let me get rid of this. So as you can see right here, we’ve typed site:hp.com and we have an additional box that usually doesn’t appear regularly in any search in Google but we’re going to learn how to get this box. All right, so what we’re going to do is we’re going to go to Google and this is the regular screen that you will get from Google.
So, we’re going to type the site:hp.com and while I’m typing hp.com, you would type anything that you will consider your site or that you want to check. You can check your competitor’s site or you can check your own site. So I should do that. We hit Google search. All right, and now to get the additional box that we’re talking about, we’re going to go advance search and as you can see we have different boxes here that allow us to have advance features in our search. But right here, we can click it over here where it says date, usage right, numeric range and more and it will display this extra features right here and as you can see, the first one is date or how recent the page is.
So that’s the one that we’re going to use so you can change this to anything, but let’s change it to the past year for now and hit advanced search. Now we have, according to Google, the visibility of pages that are included on hp domain, hp.com domain to have been have been crawled or have been added during the past year, 470,000. And it also gives us some extra piece of information here that is how reason it is or it gives us the date of crawl. So as you can see here, this was one was crawled in October 1, 2008 and so forth and you can see difference over there, you can have an approximate number at the number of pages that have been added during the past year.
Let’s do how many pages have been added to the hp.com domain from the past 24 hours. So, as you see here, 8,280 approximately pages have been added to the hp.com domain in the past 24 hours. And you can see here the different little thing there six hours ago and so forth. So, let’s say that for example what we want to do is compare how frequently or how much fresh content is being added to our site in relationship to our competition. So let’s say that we’re working for hp.com and that we want to compare it to dell.com. So we know that in the past 24 hours for the hp.com, we have 8,000, around 8,000 pages. So let’s do the same exercise for dell.com and we have 3,800 around half of the pages, as you can see here, half of the pages that have been added to the hp.com.
So now, if you we’re thinking about this competitor in your hp.com and you think about this competitor then you can you know pretty much acknowledge that you guys are adding fresh content at two times the speed that your competitor is doing in their site. And if I was working for dell.com then the other or the other way is applicable, which is our competitors are adding pages at double the speed that we are and there has to be a strategy to overcome that and its important because ranking wise than that has a lot of way.
So I hope that these example has been important for you and that you can find it important to apply it to your next session in optimization project of your site or at least a check at another parameter that can make the difference and improve your rankings in Google. Thank you again for watching and please visit merkados.com or again sharkmediadesign.com let me put that over there sharkmediadesign.com for more information, for promotions, the digital media design and so forth, thank you so much, goodbye.
