The use of photographs by non-profit organizations to enliven their online presences has become an increasingly easy. Here as you can see a website related to the Katrina disaster, photos are being used to highlight features stories and each of these photographs takes you in to a different story. Organizations like the Nature Conservancy are doing photo contest using photography as a way to engage people.
Photos can also be used to simply show the faces who are the people that you are serving to bring that to life in a very simple fashion. There are even free tools you can download online such as this tool called “GIMP” which you can then use to help edit photographs. All of the basic functions are here simply cropping your photographs using one-touch type up.
And so how is it that you select what’s the right tool for you? Let’s highlight a couple that we think are really worth you starting with. One of the most popular tools is called “Flickr”. This is called Good Widgets. Lots of these programs are actually free for you to use.
Why don’t we start with Flickr? Let’s go ahead and start by signing in.
For the time being however I’m going to go ahead and just upload this. Now what I’m going to do is create a new set. So, create a new collection or set. And we’re going to take all the photos that we would like and we are going to track them up into this set. Let’s take a look at our layout options. We have the option if we have our own Flickr identifier to have that photo there.
And finally, we demonstrated how you yourselves could take your photographs from a tool like Flickr and then connect them to your own online platform. So as you can see many uses, there are many opportunities, many ways for you to better tell the story to better reach out, to better raise funds through the use of photographs. There is no doubt that images are powerful. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so we suggest that you take a step back and think about how can you use photography to help people see what you want them to see?
