Sherry Damatarca: Every week millions of fans tune into the hit show The Hills to watch the glamorous life of Lo Bosworth with a demanding shoot schedule, endless social and celebrity commitments there is little room for cycle interruptions.
Lo Bosworth: Working in the entertainment industry as part of Generation Y I feel like I always need to be in control of everything that goes on in my day, I need to be in control of my life, I think that my health is a top priority, and I think that if I can take control of my health especially in that time of the months, I think that that is really important.
Sherry Damatarca: A recent survey focused on oral contraceptives found that 66% of the female Canadian Generation Y population wants to reduce menstrual cramps, 61% want to have more control over their monthly cycle, and 52% want to improve the condition of their skin. Health Canada has now improved a new low dose oral contraceptive called Yaz which will help to reduce the effects of monthly hormone fluctuations. Dr. Vivien Brown is an OB/GYN in Toronto.
Dr. Vivien Brown: Traditional oral contraceptives are 21 days of active pills and seven days of inactive pills. With this new oral contraceptive we have 24 days of active pills and four days of inactive pills, so there is a much shorter hormone withdrawal phase, and that means less side-effects and symptoms for women who are sensitive to that hormone withdrawal. The symptoms that women feel during the phase of taking inactive pills includes bloating, breast tenderness, and headaches.
In addition to its unique 24/4 regimen of 24 active pills and 4 inactive pills, Yaz is a low-dose oral contraceptive that contains a special progestin called Drospirenone, this progestin treats acne and counteracts estrogen-induced sodium and water retention, resulting in less of the bloating that many women experience during their period. Angela Di Stasi: I live a really busy lifestyle and I don't have time for menstrual symptoms to get in the way of that lifestyle. And so I am just happy that there is a birth control pill finally available in Canada that I can count on and that can keep me in control.
