Owen's Mom (and Dad) on Grandparenting

Daddy Owen: When a child is born, so our two parents even more so, four grandparents. Who are these new creatures, what should they be doing in your world? Well this seems like a very good time to both ask my mom and on this special episode ask my dad. So grand parenting that is what we are talking about, so what would you guys say is the specific job of the grandparent, not the parent but the grand parent. Male: To say yes a lot. Daddy Owen: Yes to the child or the kid or yes to the parent who is also your kid. Male: Actually I find it easy to say yes to most people these days. Daddy Owen: What would you say—stays with you guys sometimes and definitely you guys do the a lot of babysitting pick her ups something like that. And we ask you like, “oh, could you take care of her, we are going to go out and do some crazy illegal drugs”. Say, what are the boundaries there? Is it okay when we ask too much of you guys? Female: Oh, I do not think you ask enough. In fact, I am just waiting to meet her out if school. You said, you should do that one day and I keep saying to that everyday, he has not asked us which day. So there is a boundary you need to tell us because we are the ones that never ask the questions. We always want to answer them that is the way it has to be. Daddy Owen: I see, so you are saying we should ask for more. Female: You could try. Daddy Owen: Right. Not wait for you guys to offer. Female Right. Male: Correct and drugs—did you tell me about that? Daddy Owen: Well she mentions it here. So let us see—so you guys were talking about like being saying yes and I know grandparents—spoil the kids which is really fun. But also, a lot of what we talk about in Dad Labs is about the changing views of parenting and how these things change and develop, we got to different cycles. When do you think a grandparent has a right to speak, advice, and critique and when do grandparents bite their tongues? Male: All the time at the time. But I think the question was, when you give advice and so on. Daddy Owen: Yes. Male: When you are asked for it. Female: Only when you are asked for it. Daddy Owen: Really. Female: Yes. Male: Yes. Daddy Owen: So there is a lot of this that you need to kind of go to you guys all right. Male: Are you asking? Daddy Owen: No, most certainly, certainly not. What—do you like some?| Male: Yes thank you. Daddy Owen: Yes we only have one glass—there is a little budget here but we are expanding. Okay so a couple of last questions and do you have a favorite grandchild? Female: No. Male: Yes. But I am not saying. Female: Because we do. But it varies from day to day. Daddy Owen: Cool. Female: Sometimes it varies from hour to hour. Sometimes it varies from minute to minute. Daddy Owen: All right, so tell me about this tells me about camp nana. What that is and what is the vision of that? Male: We started a few years ago when we only have two grandchildren and they would visit us from California and we call it a camp nana when we did all sorts of exciting things like go to Wal-Mart, Marshals, and things that grandkids like and I developed from there. Daddy Owen: Now you get a target as well. Male: We do go to target occasionally. Daddy Owen: Next summer, yes. Female: We go for a picnics and we go to state parks and we go swimming and just a one time that we get to eat a hamburger or a hotdog. Daddy Owen: A nursing home does not allow that. So with that though, you take the grandkids for like a week. Just you guys and the grandkids. Female: Yes. Daddy Owen: And that is good. Female: Yes. Daddy Owen: What do you guys doing next week? Female: No interfering parents very lovely we get to feed them what we think they should eat. Male: And we go to spank them every now and then. Daddy Owen: This is the strangest camp I have ever heard of. This are my grandparents and this has been ask my mom. Female: No. Daddy Owen: No, I am sorry. No, you are much younger than that. My parents, my parents lively still kicking they are still kicking. This has been Ask My Mom. I have started my
