Welcome to Common Man Cocktails. I’m your host Derrick Schommer and today we’re going to do the POM beach. This is cool. It’s going to have an ounce of POM Wonderful, it’s a 100% Pomegranate juice. I am a huge fan of pomegranates. That’s a secret fact. I like pomegranate seeds. I eat pomegranates whenever I can find them. This is the next best thing already, the seeds are gone; now it’s juice.
We’re going to use some simple syrup. We’re going to bring back the Goslings Black Seal or any other dark rum that you may have on you, a little of pineapple juice. We’re going go with the Brave Spirits At Ease rum because it donates $2 to the men and women of the Armed Forces, police, fire department and just a half ounce of a little rum, a little coconut rum which brings a little more tropic feel. We’ve got the tropic pineapple, we get the coconut, we get the pomegranates, everything is for a hot sunny days, grown in the sun, perfect.
So, that’s what we’re going to do today. We’re going to put that in a Collins glass because it’s fancy. You can use these frosted ones if you have them. Go to awesomedrinks.com, you can pick up sets of four or more of these. You can always buy more. We’re running a contest, go to everydaydrinkers.tv, sign in, leave a comment and you could be randomly chosen if you’re in the United States or Canada for four pack of frosted Collins glasses to make a drink like this.
So let’s get started. Let’s start with the rum. We’re going to do one ounce of your white rum. Let’s move some of this stuff out of the way. There ends up being a lot of actual liquors and juices in here. So here you go, you’re one ounce of your light rum. We’re going to do one ounce of our dark rum. There you go, you got one ounce. We’ll do one ounce of the pomegranate, the 100% pomegranate to be very ruby? Dark red, well that’s weird, it’s got this gold orange color going on. I’ve never seen that before because what we have is we have brown and white. There you go.
We’re going to go just a half ounce of the simple syrup, just enough to sweeten it past where it is because what you’ll notice is that the pomegranate juice, if you’ve ever had pomegranate juice that’s not super and it seems the sugars are in here. Well, 32 grams of sugar, so there’s a lot of sugar in there but it’s funny not so serious. It just doesn’t have that overbearing sweet taste to it so the simple sugar, that isn’t going to hurt a bit. We’re throwing just a half ounce of coconut rum in there to tropic it up a little bit more. If tropic’s a word or herb or whatever I just made it into.
And I will do two ounces of the pineapple juice. You know what, going to go with four ounce of the simple syrup, a little bit more. There you go. That covers all of our main ingredients, now what we’ll do is will drop some ice in there. This does take a lot of ingredients to make this drink. Throw in ice on our Collins glass. That should do it and really ice this up.
With tropical drinks I am a huge fan of really super cold. I just like my drinks really cold especially because it’s hot in these lights, just pour that in there. Now it’s got kind of a, not a brown. It’s different. Right now it’s still getting over the fact that I just shoot the crap out of this so it’s very soggy and full of energy in life right now so you get the little head on there and that’s kind of neat. But I don’t know it just looks refreshing, kind of looks like a dark tea. This is a dark tea.
Then what we’re going to is we’re going to just garnish this. Let’s see. Let’s go with one of these, crazy little swords. That will work. And what we’ll do is we’re going to just stab in it this little cherry here. Maybe throw a little wedge of pineapple on the top; give it a little flare. Now, I cheated this. If you want to know a good way to cheat about these garnishes, what you could do is you can go out and you can buy a big pineapple. You could buy a half like carved pineapple that you slice up or as in this case, as you could tell I just use one of those old cans of pre-sliced pineapples. I wouldn’t do this even you’re friends around because it’s kind of, it’s too small unless you really made an impact because it’s really not. You want those big healthy ones if you can get them but I’m lazier right now and there you go, that’s the POM Beach, P-O-M, not Palm Beach to play in words.
This is a raspberry I found on POM Wonderful’s website. I got to tell you this is an interesting drink, interesting cocktail in many ways. First, sweet, the attack is sweet and then there’s this likes mid palate transition. It is like a wine. It’s got a mid-palate transition like pineapples, a little tropical coconut and then it ends with almost a bitter, just a slight bitter pomegranate like over the top of the pomegranate like you could drink raw, just take it raw.
Yes, so it ends with a dry acidic or something. I’m not sure what that is but you get a little bit of that but it’s been curbed off from all the sugars and the pineapple juice. Actually, this is better than drinking it raw. This has so much more flavor, great or too wonderful drink. It’s well balanced in every direction, flavor-wise. There you go that’s your POM Beach.
Also, don’t forget to check out our sponsor Cavalino. You can get their Silver and their Reposado, definitely if you get to the liquor store or supermarket depending on where you are, how you sell it. If you go to the tequila aisles, there are just so many to choose from and really you don’t know where to go, so I would just try looking for this label as a good place to go. And there you go.
I’m your host Derrick Schommer. We’re teaching you how to drink.
