Host: What are the symptoms of PTSD in a child and in an adolescent?
Dr. Hayley Sherwood: A child or an adolescent with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD may exhibit a number of symptoms including re-experiencing the incident through play, nightmares or flashbacks, avoiding reminders of the incident, a lack of responsiveness, a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities, feeling hopeless about the future, sleep problems, irritability, poor concentration, startling easily, regressing to behaviors typical of much younger children, feeling very sad or depressed or suicidal thoughts or actions. If after one month in a safe environment a child or adolescent is unable to return to normal routines and activities or develops any new symptoms, it is important to seek help from a mental health professional.
