Hello and welcome to the knee pain guru, knee pain questions answered. My name is Bill and I have a question from Tony. Tony asks, he just downloaded the free report on how to deal with a knee pain. I am an active business professional who is bit of involved in sport, physical activity all my life. I have been recently qualified as the personal fitness trainer in the state, areas, such as alternative therapies, energy feeling, and nutrition. I have started to help in fitness business called Key Performance, it's support and care facility. Good job!
Lately, I have noticed I have problems with my left knee. I do a fair bit of jogging, road running, mainly each week, and noticed about three weeks ago, I have some problems with my left hamstring muscle and muscle areas around my knee and now my patella. It has now resulted in me being not able to run or train properly for a few days and with my business, I need to sort this out.
Before I start working out with physio, I was trying to find an inexpensive way to identify and fix my problem on left knee. At present I feel sharp pain on the inside of my knee when I turn. I also notice if I have my knee flex and go to straighten it I hear a little click and feel some discomfort. This is getting to me as I notice, as I am not active and lose out on clients and business. Can you suggest anything?
Well Tony, thank you for you question. Absolutely what is coming to my mind in your description is that whatever happens with your hamstring is pulling on causing the tendons and ligaments in your knee to pull real tight together. That's your body's natural reaction. Your nervous system ticks in when it experiences pain, it tenses up. This is functional for the experience of the pain and for your body to protecting itself from getting injured further.
It's not functional for you to go back in your life and function without the pain. So what I believe is going on your knee is that tendons and ligaments are pulling very tight on the bones in your lower leg than the bones in your upper leg, causing these bones to squeeze on the meniscus, which is the cartilage between your knees. You can think of what's happening and it's like piece of bubblegum between two bricks. And when you push those two bricks together real hard, it kind of push that bubble gum out at the side of the brick, which is the meniscus causing the pain between your knees.
In working with my own clients; in working with client, I have seen that being a big case and this happens as a result of like a misstep or just you are not warmed up enough or whatever the case is, and the knee will tense up to protect it from getting injured further and then you have -- this is going on when you are clicking and the pain on the inside or the outside of your knee.
So what I would suggest is a lot of the exercises in my book Stop Your Knee Pain is a huge benefit in terms of being able to help with what's going on within the knee joint itself. The exercises, stretch and strength the tendons and ligaments within the knees. When you do that, you are going to be able to create the space within the knee joint itself or the meniscus to be able to move back in place on its own and to be amazed at the release that happens as a result of that.
