Palm Pre Basics
Part Ten of Twelve: Messaging
Jay Goldman: Hi I'm Jay Goldman the host of Mr. Mobile. Today we're going to take a look at the messaging application on the Palm Pre. You'll find messaging in the Launcher under Messaging. Messaging takes advantage of Synergy a built in feature of Web OS to tie together different ways that you can message your contacts. The messaging application works with a number of different chat protocols as well as SMS to tie all of those together into one place.
You can configure the accounts that you use in messaging under preferences and accounts in the messaging menu. You'll see here that I've configured this phone's phone number as an SMS account and a number of different Google Talk and AIM accounts. Both Google Talk and AIM are the supported chat protocols by messaging. You may find that you need to the swipe gesture several times on the Pre because it can sometimes be a bit finicky about recognizing it. Messaging supports two basic views, the buddies who are available online right now and the conversation view which archives when you had different chats with different people.
You can change your satisfied tapping on the status at the top of the screen and using the keyboard to make edits to it. I might say for example that I am currently tapping, so people know that I am unavailable. You can chat with a buddy by picking them from the list and you can type directly into the field at the bottom which will send the message to them. The menu at the top here allows you to change the different ways that you are speaking to that person, so for example I'll just switch from text messaging Sean to text chatting with him through Google Chat. If you are chatting over a protocol that supports attachments like text messaging does you'll see an attachment button that appears in the field here.
Tapping on that allows me to choose an attachment that I want to send, in this case using MMS or Multimedia Messaging service to send an image to Sean from inside of the chat. The big advantage of Synergy is that messages from Sean are all gathered together in one place regardless of how we had the conversation. So you'll note that I've had a conversation with him using Google Talk and then several conversations using SMS and they are all gathered together in a sequential flow so I can keep track of them.
