In order to optimized the camera for museum scenes. It’s very simple, out of all the 24 scenes that this camera has in the scene mode; museum is not one of them. So, if you’re in the museum and you want to take pictures, there is really just one thing you absolutely have to remember and that is to avoid using the flash. Because the flash is not allowed to be used, what you need to do is increase the ISO in order to allow for a faster shutter speed so you can handhold the camera.
So very simple, go ahead and press the quick menu button for a second. Go to ISO and increase the ISO. I am going to go with 400 for now. Before you escape the menu, move over to white balance and remember with every picture you want to make sure that the white balance is set accordingly. So in a museum, you more than likely have tungsten or halogen lights. So go down, until you get to halogen, this will compensate for the yellowish cast in the lighting being used in the museum and now you can go ahead and press the button to escape the menu.
Now with my ISO increased and my white balance properly set, I can go ahead and press the shutter button halfway, focus on my target and before I take the picture, I want to make sure that my shutter speed is fast enough so I can handhold the shot. If this figure is below 1/30th of the second, then you may want to increase the ISO some more. If there is so little light that your having difficulty focusing, what you can do is just use the manual focus, and that is very easy, just turn your focusing switch here to MF, and in the back, use the quick menu joystick to move the focusing meter to the approximate distance between you and the subject. You can use the manual focusing square that appears when you move the joystick up and down and it may help a little bit but basically what I do is just guess the distance between me and the subject, then I will press the shutter half way again, just to give the camera a second to get ready. Recompose the image and press the shutter button the rest of the way to take the picture.
