So, I'm happy to be back here with you on a Thursday pre-Big Show, after a few days away with the family, not what we had originally counted on. The original plan was, head up to Sacramento on Sunday, do the TV spot Monday, spend another few days with the cousins. Well, those plans changed Saturday afternoon.
I received a call from the cousin saying, everybody is sick here, probably not a good idea that you stay. So, at that point, we had two choices. Number one, writing complaint about why we're not going to be able to stay with the cousins, the whole vacation is the shambles, maybe we shouldn't even go.
Or two, Hey! Now we've got a clean slate. Now we can pretty much do whatever we want. The only thing that is on the agenda right now is the morning TV spot on Monday. After that, it's open. So what do we do?
Of course, we went for choice number two. Sat down, did a quick Google search, what else is in Sacramento, we found Raging Waters, which is at just a short distance, couple of hours away from Monterey Bay Aquarium, so we went down and did that.
Then as it turns out, another set of cousins was doing with some camping, how do you feel about camping, down to Santa Cruz. So we stopped by, we had a wonderful night with them. The cousins got to play an incredible couple of days, simply because of the fact that we took a quick shift of the mindset.
That's something that I see when I work with parents, when I work with kids during the middle school years. That is one of the challenges that folks really have a difficulty in overcoming. Plans change sometimes on the spur of the moment.
Your child gets on from school, all of a sudden, there is a test, having counted on a test, coming the following day, or, there is now a project that is due the week after there was supposed to be a way for an entire week. Now a complete change of plans, what are you going to do?
Writing compliant about it, or I wish it could be this way, I wish it could be that way, I can't believe, all of that. If it helped, if it was going to change, what has already happened? We know it's completely illogical to think that's going to happen.
So, you have to kind of put that to the side and this is where the challenge comes in, to helping your kids, to see that some events have already taken place and you're not going to be able to change what has already happened. But you have the power to change what is going to happen in the future and you can be an incredible model for them.
In the next couple of weeks, we're going to be kind of leading into this back to school charge. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to really model what it means to adapt, to take a situation, whatever it might be, a change of vacation plans, maybe just to change a routine around the house, something where your child is counted on an event occurring, and suddenly, there is a change and you don't have to think too hard. I'm sure something like that has come up in the past and we'll certainly come up in the future.
But when those occasions rise, take an opportunity to sit down in the moments, with your child and say, okay, we have a couple of choices laid out for them and then do your very best to sit with them, really soliciting their ideas about how you can make the best out of a situation that most people will look at and say, oh, it's been sport, it's been --.
So, leading in then to the back of the school charge, I think, it sets a wonderful precedent, a wonderful foundation for how kids can take on the challenges that they're going to face throughout the school year, things that show up that were unexpected. You start laying the ground for that now, but then it becomes easier for them to adapt as the school year moves on, a wonderful skill to have.
For my sister-in-law, who was so kind in bringing this out to the camp's site, this episode is for you. Thank you for a wonderful day and night at the camp site, which I had originally thought, may not be the top highlight of vacation, it certainly was. Take care!
