Participating in Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Trials

Joan Ohayon: The advice I give to an MS patient is really no different from anybody else that is looking for research, it's something that I think that they need to kind of seek out what they're looking for in terms of a specific study and it's important that they understand what's involved with the study. They understand the different phases of trials. A phase one, phase two trial is so different from a phase three trial. And it's important that they discuss this with the researchers who are involved along with their own neurologist. I think it's important that the person that is caring for them and prescribing their existing treatments if any is on board, because for example in our case with the patients that we follow on our trials we consider kind of a collaboration. We want to make sure that we’re communicating with their outside clinicians and likewise we can kind of help support each other. So I think, it's just a matter of really becoming informed in understanding that while I'm very supportive of research and you know, I want patients for my trials, it's also important that they really understand that this is experimental, there are risk involved and they need to understand that thoroughly.
