Male Speaker: Tudo's two-year old daughter has eczema. She is always itchy. So mom and daughter went to see Dr. Sears in his office.
Girl: Hi, Dr. Jim.
Dr. Sears: Should I get a five?
Girl: Yeah.
Dr. Sears: Oh! thank you very much. Oh my Gosh! Look at your skin. It is so dry.
Girl: Doctor Jim my skin itches.
Dr. Sears: Does she scratch all the time?
Mother: Yeah she scratches all the time. It actually started when she was nine-months old. It's gotten increasingly worse. The most difficult part is just actually seeing her in pain.
Dr. Sears: Does that itch a lot?
Girl: Yeah.
Dr. Sears: I bet it does. Do you know what eczema is?
Girl: Yeah.
Dr. Sears: That means itchy dry skin, all the time and it's miserable. It's a chronic condition that usually isn't cured. It's more of a matter of controlling it with the right medications, lots of creams, avoiding certain food.
Mother: She scratches like this all day long. I will then give her short showers in the middle of the night just to try to reduce itching.
Dr. Sears: Kids love bath, but either a bath or shower as long as it's short, less than 10 minutes and not too warm, they are pat and dry, now we're going to apply a nice occulsive cream or ointment, Aquaphor is great. It's one of my favorite ointments. We are going to grease her all up and what's that is going to do is seal in all the moisture. I call it the soap that seal. We are going to treat from the inside too, with the proper foods, correct nutrition, Omega 3 are so important. Fish, flaxseed oil, certain nuts.
