Darren Julian: My name is Darren Julian and I’m the Urban Wildlife specialist for Arizona Game and Fish Department. I don’t think that the general public in the Valley of Phoenix area knows that there are Peregrines down here.
Peregrine Falcons are the fastest flying bird in the world. They can reach dive speeds of over 200 miles an hour. Most people that spent time down here, that work in these buildings around here certainly have seen them, you know, off and on.
We first heard about Peregrine Falcons in downtown back in 1996. It’s the first time that these pair and actually any pair of Peregrine Falcons in the downtown area has raised a young to fledgling age. There it is right there. The fledgling, you know, took a flight a little too soon but the fledgling was on the second-story roof. It was reported that it couldn’t fly. Volunteers came out and thought maybe it had a broken wing. They grabbed it and took it to our center where it was x-rayed and looked over by a licensed vet. Picked it up the next morning and we put it in a box but it jumped up in the ledge and decided to move on. Oh that’s that.
This is kind of a mock setting to their natural habitat. They usually nest on cliff, rock, phases. Except for the windows, this is just a big rocky canyon through here and there is, you know, abundance of prey down here as well. There are top predator in their group here. You know, there is no other bird that are coming at that. They are the top dogs down here. So, there’s a lot of time invested by these Peregrines to raise young so they’re not going to give up on sitting on an egg for 30 days, you know, devoting that much time, and then, you know, caring for them for another 30, 35 days before they can fly. You know, they will stay together as long, as long as they need to, as long as things are viable, if the female is still fertile and that…
