Since it was discovered earlier this century, the lost city of Machu Picchu has taken its place as one of the world’s most enigmatic archaeological site. Machu Picchu is known as the lost city of the Incas. It is like some sort of ancient ghost town high up in the Andes. Eventhough it was only discovered in the year 1911, it is today, the best known, as well as the most mysterious of all of the archaeological sites in Peru.
After a brief walk, the ruins of Machu Picchu suddenly appear as a striking panorama. Nobody knows for certain who built it. Nor what took place here. And the site is not associated with any events. Walking away from the main square, we approached the lower part of the sacred plaza which houses Machu Picchu’s only round building, the Temple of the Sun. This observatory is considered to contain the city’s most perfect stonework. In the middle of the precisely constructed stonework, lies a mass of irregularly-shaped stone, used for astronomical observation.
Also in the sacred plaza, is the main shrine of Machu Picchu called Intihuatana, translated in Quechua to mean, “The heating post of the sun.” Although the stone here is often referred to as a sundial, it likely served the purpose of making astronomical observations and in calculating the passing seasons, another reason for the success of the farming at Machu Picchu.
Since it was discovered earlier this century, the lost city of Macchu Picchu has taken its place as one of the world’s most enigmatic archaeological site. As an important tourist attraction, it is one of Peru’s many treasures.
