Shalom. I am Rabbi Jonathan Ginsburg of the Ezra-Habonim Niles Township Jewish Congregation. Everybody should have one good joke at least for the center table, so here is one—an oldie but goodie.
Most Jews know the “Ma nish-tana ha-laila hazeh. mi kol ha-leilot” which means why is this night different at all the other nights.
The story goes at the first Jewish guy to be knighted by the Queen of England is called by the chief of protocol and he says to her, “What should I do?” and she says, “Well, when you walk down the west ministry abbey that you will get to the bottom, you will kneel, the queen will tap you on the shoulder with a sword and you are to say this sentence in Latin.” He says, “But I do not know any Latin.” She said, “Well, memorize it.” He says, “What if I am nervous and I forget it.” She says, “Well, write it on your hand.”
So he does all that. And that big day comes and all that news people are there and the big crowd, he is sweating and nervous. He walks down, he kneels, gets to the bottom, and of course he gets totally blank, he forgotten what the sentence is. But he remembers one sentence he heard of Sunday synagogue and of course the thing on his hand got rub off, he cannot read it anymore, but this Hebrew sentence so saved the day.
So he figures no one will know, he says “Ma nish-tana ha-laila hazeh. mi kol ha-leilot” well the queen has knighted a few people before and she knows this is not what any of them have said, so she turns to her chief of protocol and says, “Why is this knight is different than all the other knights?”
Well, hopefully that will entertain your troupes a little bit at the center table and have a wonderful Passover.
