Skelaxin is the brand name for metaxalone, a muscle relaxant which was approved by the FDA in 1962. Metaxalone is a prescription medication which is available both as a generic drug and under the brand name Skelaxin. Metaxalone is a muscle relaxant with sedative properties. Doctors have not yet determined exactly how metaxalone works. But it is believed that it enters the central nervous system to relax muscles. Metaxalone is commonly used in conjunction with physical therapy to treat short term muscle aches and spasms. It maybe prescribed for patients with strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries. Skelaxin is available orally in 400 and 800 mg tablets. Metaxalone should be taken with water because this medication can be addictive. Never take extra doses.
The most common side effects of metaxalone are relatively mild and include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. But ask your doctor for a complete list and remember be sure you tell your doctor immediately if you experienced difficulty breathing, yellowing skin, seizures or any other significant changes.
Metaxalone should not be taken with alcohol or other drugs that cause drowsiness. Ask your doctor for a full list of medications and conditions that should not be combined with metaxalone. Skelaxin can be helpful for patients dealing with short term muscle pain. Please ask for and review all the patient information provided by your doctor before taking this medication. However, it should always be used under the direct care of the physician.
