This is Dave of Video-FX-Universe.com and today we are going to be doing a Photoshop tutorial on how to turn a photo into a cartoon-type image. Basically I have an image here of some model and we are going to be turning her into a cartoon. It is quite simple to do and also quite fun as well.
What we need to do first is duplicate the layer and what we need to do is change the layer into a color dodge. Okay? It is very bright now and it is perfectly normal. Now what we need to do is press control and I to invert the image. If it goes completely white it is perfectly normal and it has got to filter, blur and change it to seven. Seven point zero will be fine.
Now what we need to do is go to layer, new adjustment layer and threshold. Okay? Now what you need to do to this is change the threshold level to 234, okay? Now we have a, basically a black and white pen type drawing of the image.
Now, what we need to do is create a new layer. So you go to layer, new layer. Okay you can see at the top here we are gong to change the blending mode to multiply. Now what we need to do is select your brush and you would basically paint over it now. Find a color that is close to the skin color and paint on the picture itself. And as you can see you do not go over the lines or any of the dark part because you basically you have changed the screen mode to multiply so you can be pretty flexible in doing this you do not need to worry about rubbing out any bit of the face or any of the features. Make sure that you choose the brush size that is big enough and try to be careful not to go out of the lines if, like say here, because that is not part of the face anymore. Try to avoid the eyes, avoid the lips and the teeth and basically just cover up the face as best as possible.
When you have colored the face you should get something like this. Obviously now you just move on to do the other features. We are going to do the lips now. You give us some lipstick and make sure you adjust your pen size or your brush size rather and zoom in if needed because it helps hell of a lot more if you zoom in because you can get accurate with smaller details such as this. So basically, be careful that you do not go over the teeth and basically give us some nice lips.
Over the top, obviously, when you have darker areas in the lips you might be able to see. See that you cannot go over the black lines just as stated, but you know you can still try to have a go and just give it a faint outline in the lip. Do the same with the eyes, change the eyes I will give her some blue eyes for a nice color and just basically color in the eyes.
