Welcome to another new darkroom.com video tutorial. Today I am going to show how to change the eye color of a model. So let us get started.
First of all what we are going to do is we are going to open up an image here, we have a picture of a model with brown eyes and they might now work that great with the model’s dress or with the background scenery. So we are going to change them.
So what we are going to do is go over to our ‘layers palette’ over here and we are going to go down to the bottom to ‘new fill’ or ‘adjustment layer,’ click that and we are going to go up to the ‘hue saturation.’ Now you will see that this brings up the hue saturation window without your hue saturation and lightness levels. But over here, there is also a color eyes box, we are going to check that and you will notice that it just change the whole entire image.
What we want to do is select the desired color we are looking for. We just say with this one, we are looking for a more bluish tinge. We will go here and bring up the lightness a little bit and once you have the desired color you are looking for, click ‘okay’ and you will see that it is added a layer mask here.
So what we are going to do, it is a white one, and we want to fill this with black. We are going to invert it so clicking on the mask we are going to hit ‘control and eye,’ you will see that the photo is going back to normal.
Now, what we want to do is to select your brush over here and you might want to go for a harder brush somewhere around 80% and you are going to have the diameter roughly the size of the eye. So I am going to adjust this and bring this up a little bit here and what we are going to do is we are going to make sure that your foreground color is white, since we have a black mask here. And we are just going to click, and we are going to click over here too. And this will add the color that we are looking for into the eye.
Now do not worry about getting the color into the eyelids, we are going to fix that in just a moment. Alright, we are going to see here. We might want to smooth out the edges of the paint that we just put on to the eyes, so we are going to ‘filter,’ ‘blur,’ and then ‘gush and blur.’ This will even out this color around the edges here of the eye. Usually a radius are around three to four and a half is the correct amount, so we are going to just put this up and a little bit there and that is fine then hit ‘okay’ and that will just even out the color here, refine the edges a little bit.
Now, next step is to switch your foreground color to black and we are going to take and we are going to pump this down a little bit here using the brackets, we are going to make the brush size smaller and we are going to paint black under that mask which will take the blue away from the eyelids here.
Do not worry if you mess up and take too much blue off, like what I have did here. So I am going to switch back to white and paint some of that back in over here. I wanted to switch to black, I got a little too much, switch here and I like to go over here, I did not get enough here. I am going to excellently take a little bit of blue eyes and I am going to switch over to white or I am going to paint some of that blue back in. There we are.
Now you will noticed that the eye lashes are also painted blue, so you might have to do some really fine touching of the eyelashes here with your black foreground to get that blue out of there and over here as well, and if you do too much I guess you can just easily just go back and paint white on there and it will put away the blue ray back. Now, let us see here, we are going to go back up here to blur and then gush and blur. Once again to smooth out those edges that we just cleaned up. Perfect, let us see.
And if that is a little too much, the good thing is we added an adjustment layer here and we are going to adjust the opacity a little bit. Then we are just going to bring it down. Anyway it looks a little bit more natural somewhere in the 80’s and if our color is wrong, it is very simple, we just double click back in here and we can adjust our color. It was a little too much so we are going to add a little or take away some of the blue because it is little more natural blue, then here you go.
It is a very easy way to change a model’s eye color.
