Photoshop tutorial - Sharpening and Color

This tutorial will show you how to improve the colors and sharpen the details. We will be working in LAB color. Open a Curve adjustment layer. Drag the A and B channel in on grid length. Drag a new point down a little on the light channel. We will increase channel A to increase only the red. Play around with the channel until you get a pleasant looking color. Duplicate the original layer.

Apply a high pass filter with a small value. Use a threshold layer to find the darkest point in the pass. Drag slider to the left until most of the black are gone. This is your darkest point. Drag it to the corner so you can find it later. Cancel out the threshold. Open color range. Pick the darkest point on the picture that we marked earlier. Change the preview to Grayscale to preview the result. Set the value to about 50 and press ok. Darken the selected area even more with level. Drag the black triangle towards the begning of the curve and the white triangle towards the middle.

Set blending mode to multiply. Now only the darker pixel will show. Lower the opacity if its too strong. Duplicate the original layer again. And do the same with the lighest area. But select the lightest area and make the rest black opposite of what we did with the shadows. This time use SCREEN for blending mode. It will only show the lighter pixel but it created some halo. Turn off this layer for now. Bring up color range again. Select somewhere dark. And increase the value until the preview looks kind of smooth. Turn on this layer again. And use the level to darken the selected area so that where it suppose to dark there will not be highlights or halos. Please visit my website at www.sangweng.
