Michael Peterson: Hello, my name is Michael Peterson. I've been an independent locksmith in Oak Park Illinois, for the last 10 years. Today I'm demonstrating basic lock picking techniques.
For this demonstration, I'll using tension a tool and a basic pick. I've also be showing how to pick a commercial grade lever. A tension tool to apply pressure on the cylinder and the pick is to manipulate the pins into the resting position of the key usually has them in, so for today demonstration I'll pick a commercial grade lever.
Commercial grade levers are low hard to the pick, because the cylinder in side ways, I'll show you how to do it now. Insert the tension tool into the cylinder. Apply clockwise or counterclockwise pressure on to the tension tool. This will bind the cylinder. Using your pick manipulate the pins and try to get the cylinder return. You want to try to manipulate the pins so that the cylinder returns. On most lockers the cylinder has a spring inside that holds pressure on it, therefore when you do pick the lock it always moves the small amount. It's important to look for this and when it happens not to take pressure of the tension tool.
Once the cylinder is picked use a flathead screwdriver to turn the cylinder. Do not take the pressure of with tension wrench. The lock should now be unlocked. You do not have to worry about returning the cylinder to its resting position on a commercial grade lever, because the spring assists inside the lock will return it there for you. Next I'll be showing how to pick a rim cylinder.
