Nina Sebastiane: Baby showers are all the rage in America and they are slowly making their way across the pound. As seen on the hit series Sex and the City baby showers are fun and social way of preparing the new mom for the arrival for her baby. Now if you have ever been to a baby shower like me you will know that the only gift to be seen with is the nappy cake. Sounds appetizing, doesn't it? Sam Terry from the Nappy Cake company and Stephanie Tiley from Shower My Baby are here to tells us how to make your Baby Shower, go up for the bang. Welcome ladies. So what is a Baby Shower for those who haven't experienced it yet?
Stephanie Tiley: Well Baby Shower is an occasion for Mom-to be to have a little party with her friends before baby is born and she can sit back, relax, play a few games, talk babies and then go away and would be really excited about the arrival of the baby.
Nina Sebastiane: Sounds fantastic. Now the only thing I would say about this is a six or seven months pregnant, the last thing a pregnant women wants to do is organize a party. So what you do?
Stephanie Tiley: Well the thing is you don't organize the party either close friend or family members does it for and you just sit back and let them do all the hard work.
Nina Sebastiane: Well Steph you have brought some of your pack with you. Talk me through what comes with the Shower My Baby shower pack?
Stephanie Tiley: Well obviously as we have said it is a new concept in the UK. So we have tried to putting a lot of detail in that. So it starts with a brochure that covers, planning, themes, games and even going to score menu suggestions and how to decorate the house and obviously in the pack comes all the material that you would need to decorate the room. We have confetti, we have napkins, we have banners, balloons, and then we have the games that you can play and some kids types for mom-to be.
Nina Sebastiane: So everything has been planned down.
Stephanie Tiley: I mean I have obviously held baby showers and I have used this material so through doing planning and doing the parties myself, I have sort of added, taken things away and it has given me loads of ideas of what we need in the UK.
Nina Sebastiane: Right, because this isn't really a UK thing, is it?
Stephanie Tiley: No.
Nina Sebastiane: Where does it come from?
Stephanie Tiley: Well it is being going for centuries, but obviously it has been huge in America for years. But I am going to see developing in the same way that Halloween has developed over here and now we have got all the graduation bulls at high school. So slowly in the UK thinking, hey you know we need to be celebrating having this baby. So let's have party. Well also I know like me working mom, you get to a stage where probably six or seven months you are thinking well, I haven't caught up with a lot of my friends or I am just getting ready to leave work and I kind of wanted to do a sort of goodbye. So is this sometimes taking a place of sort of worth leaving to do?
Stephanie Tiley: I have seen naturally over the last sort of couple of months a lot of the parents going out to office places this sort of having a collection buying nappy cake as the gift and then sort of having enough office party as leaving, the baby showers theme at the leaving party which I think is really nice.
Nina Sebastiane: Now let's about the nappy cake because it Sam is here from Nappy Cake Company. Now Sam I have to say, it doesn't sound very appetizing.
Sam Terry: Now we can't eat it. So it is there to look at and to be used.
Nina Sebastiane: It looks absolutely glorious though, so what is a Nappy Cake?
Sam Terry: Well basically it is made in the shape of like tiered, like what you would say a weeding cake, a tiered cake. But it is decorative, all useful items for moms and babies. We have got --
Nina Sebastiane: There is a lot of very practical things in there I was noticing, I wish somebody would have given me one of these. So you can get varying sort of heights and tiers, I suppose and it just looks like a weeding cake, doesn't it? It is fantastic.
Stephanie Tiley: Absolutely stunning.
Nina Sebastiane: It is almost the center piece of the party.
Sam Terry: That's what people do use them for somebody holding a baby shower they will have the nappy cake as the center piece.
Nina Sebastiane: Okay and you can get practical things as you as say. So you have got your nappies and you have got your baby wash and all sort of stuff. So do you tailor them to individuals and what people might want?
Sam Terry: I can do, I do have a set starting from a single tear up to deluxe cake which contains champagne and toiletries for the mom and baby. But I do often get requests for tailor making it because --
Nina Sebastiane: Now this one is absolute glorious, I mean it has got a little teddy around here, you maybe can't see it with the camera, but you have got a bottle of champagne. You have even got baby nail clippers in there. It has been --
Stephanie Tiley: A round tape.
Nina Sebastiane: So how did you come up with this idea Sam?
Sam Terry: Well I have got a simple one when I was pregnant with my first child about six years ago and I thought it was just wonderful and I wondered while nobody in England was doing it and did try to find people in England doing them and when I couldn't I thought, well why not do it myself.
Nina Sebastiane: Great.
Sam Terry: It took me a few years to get inspiration to do it.
Nina Sebastiane: I mean they are absolutely glorious and I mean what sort of budget am I looking at if I kind of want to start off with perhaps one of the smaller cakes?
Sam Terry: The smallest is 1499.
Nina Sebastiane: Right, going up to --
Sam Terry: And the deluxe cake is 175. But we tend to sell them in the region of about 50 to 60 pounds which is standard.
Nina Sebastiane: Great they look fantastic. I mean both of you ladies have setup businesses having you obviously around the baby shower and you work closely together, don't you?
Stephanie Tiley: Yeah, I mean location wise we do, but Sam and I have been battling about six months ago didn't way and we have decided it would be great idea because it is so -- baby showers and nappy cakes so go hand in hand. So we promote each other's products.
Nina Sebastiane: Now when I was pregnant with my first I did had -- she has a baby shower but it was a complete surprise to me. I went out on a Saturday morning, I was seven and a half months pregnant my girlfriend said look I will take you to a massage, so we went out had a lovely morning massage and I came back all sort of floaty and lovely, walked into the house and as I walked in, I had this bit of commotion in the back and my partner came to the door and I just sort of jiggle in the back and I went what is going on and moving through back and of course there were 40 people sitting or standing -- standing and sitting could fit them all, in my backroom with this big surprise and this big banner and everything, I tell you I nearly fell over.
Stephanie Tiley: You were going to labor.
Nina Sebastiane: I was absolutely falling, it was the most shocking thing but it was on a brilliant, brilliant afternoon and I caught with people haven't seen in such a long time. Now one of the things that I saw in your pipe that I just loved is a little twist on pin the tail on the donkey.
Stephanie Tiley: That's right, yes. I have taken the obviously the children's game you just mentioned and we have come up with pin the dummy on the baby.
Nina Sebastiane: Oh brilliant!
Stephanie Tiley: We have done obviously the --
Nina Sebastiane: Let's have a look at the cameras there. It sounds like a fairly good event if you want it to be.
Stephanie Tiley: Oh, I am sure. I mean have had it going on until 4 am in the morning but this game is definitely a hit. Everyone love this game, blind folded --
Nina Sebastiane: Absolutely. You obviously work together and you work together quite well. I mean how long your business has been running?
Stephanie Tiley: Well I have been researching probably the whole concept of baby showers for 18 months on the website went live in January.
Sam Terry: We have had idea for years, but I really got it up and running in May this year.
Nina Sebastiane: Because you are both moms. So do you work from home?
Sam Terry: Yes we do at moments.
Nina Sebastiane: Computer in the backroom.
Stephanie Tiley: Computer and sort of -- have a sort of small office workshop where such a store and products and things you do something there, but with the four children and it is fun tough.
Nina Sebastiane: It sounds brilliant, I mean you have got four children, Sam you how many have got?
Sam Terry: I have got two.
Nina Sebastiane: I don't know how you find energy. Well listen I just thank you so much for coming in and telling us about both of your business ideas and I think they are brilliant I have to say these baby cake is great. I mean we have seen this one, the roche one; I love this leopard skin on the box. Does that double up for anything else?
Sam Terry: Well, we have had a new mom or mom-to-be I should say getting married and I used the --
Nina Sebastiane: Alright. I would say head and come to baby shower.
Sam Terry: Yes.
Nina Sebastiane: Absolutely brilliant. So Steph thanks very much for coming in.
