High levels of a molecule called platelet-activating factor were seen in all patients who had a severe anaphylactic reaction in the past, 20% of those who had a mild anaphylactic reaction and only 4% of controls. As well, low levels of an enzyme that breaks down PAF were noted in those with a history of severe anaphylaxis.
From Texas, a vaccine has been developed that counteracts the effects of cocaine. The vaccine is made up of a combination of inactive cocaine and cholera protein, and works by stimulating the immune system to create antibodies to the compound. The antibodies also cross-react to cocaine and prevent it from reaching the brain. A multi-centered clinical trial is currently being planned to evaluate its definitive safety and efficacy.
And finally, from Philadelphia, a daily brisk walk may lower the risk of stress, anxiety and depression in menopausal women. In a study of over 400 women, those in the upper 66% of exercise activity were significantly less likely to report symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, when compared to those who exercised less. Activity level did not have an effect on the frequency of hot flashes.
