Playground Etiquette.
Kimberley Clayton Blaine: What is proper playground etiquette? Does my child really need to share the sand toys or get off the swing?
When you are at the park with your child, remember you want control with, not control over. You want to be a role model and role model the behavior, you would like your child to exhibit while playing at the park.
Intervene only when necessary. Encourage your child to speak up for themselves. Ask your child if they would like to bring toys to the park. If they say, yes, ask if they will be willing to share them with other children. If they say, no, suggest they leave them at home.
If your young child or toddler is the aggressor at the park, be sure to step in, redirect your child and you, the adult, make amends to the other child. If your child is resistant at the park or not getting along with others, here are some tips to help you have a successful and fun park day.
1. Acknowledge their feelings. "You like the swing, you don't want to get off." "Is this your favorite thing to do at the park?"
2. Make an observation. "You like it so much that you don't want to share."
3. Reflect. "How do you think the other kids feel not being able to have a turn?"
4. Ask for help. "What can we do to make everyone feel better?"
