(Demonstration) Can you see how blurry that sounds? When I do it without, (Demonstration) If you are very observant there, the notes go down and the pedal change happens right after it.
What this is doing is by doing this rhythmic pattern, it actually trains your body and gets you to naturally do this movement. (Demonstration) This is a valuable and amazing exercise that can train you to pedal just when you need to, and do it smoothly, so this is an amazing exercise with pedal technique, especially if you are a beginner who is trying to get a grasp of how to change the pedal and make it sound smooth.
Just remember that you want to be coming up not all the way to the top, although you probably saw me do that just because I was being lazy. But if I am actually performing, I rarely come up to the top. Do not go all the way to the top, just make it smooth and close to the surface, then go back down.
Now, you might also hear some stuff—these are just bonus things. The other one would be something called half pedaling. Let us say this is the bottom of the pedal here, and this is the top. (Demonstration) Half pedaling would be taking the pedal to the very half. It is not pushing all the way down and seeking halfway. (Demonstration)
Half pedaling is useful when you do not want to blurry out the sound. Some pieces, if you are full pedaling (Demonstration), but in half pedaling, it will sound different. (Demonstration) I do not know how you can hear the difference over the camera. Here is with the half pedal, (Demonstration) and then again, with the full pedal. (Demonstration)
When you listen to that, it is the middle ground of the two extremes. When it is all the way down, it can get blurry and mushy. When it is all the way up, it sounds dry and raw. But if you do a half pedal, it is softening it but not blurring it out so much that it is completely destroyed in it. So, half pedaling is a good middle ground. You can also get into one quarter pedaling and three quarter pedaling, but all those are techniques and what you will have to do is practice your pedal control to get that done.
When it is just for practicing, practice having no pedal. Practice in putting it all the way down, practice in pulling it off. Feel that distance between and try to pick a half-way point between those. (Demonstration) Practice until you can get your foot into the mood of doing that. We will regain more control, just like what I was talking about fingers yesterday. That is basically what I had to say on that.
I hope you enjoyed the lesson. I am going to be busy for the next week or two doing some performances and stuff. Probably, I will not be posting lessons for another week or two, that is why I decided to do it now, so you would have something else to practice. You can be practicing your pedal techniques.
The next lesson is going to be on rolling chords. I will explain this one sign in music and show you how to do it properly.
Take care and happy practicing. Thank you very much.
