D-G play, D-G play, D-G, and eventually what your body will do is it will actually start playing things easier and then it will not be as hard. Okay, so if you do not believe me about this. Try taking this challenge. Go to your piano or keyboard or whatever and I want you to start playing a song that you know. Tell your self, “oh, man, this is going to be so hard. It is so tough. It is so hard to hit this one cord and do this one pass. It is so difficult, I do not think I can do it, ah.” So do that to like five minutes, just tire your self up. Now, try and play it and keep thinking this is so hard, this is so hard. And then after that, and stop, take a break maybe 10 minutes and then go back and then talk about, okay, this is so easy. This is so easy. Like, I could do this. This is so easy. And just think of how you can relax.
Now, relax and then just play it through and while you are playing it, say, “This is easy, this is easy, this is easy, this is easy” over and over again. And just keep looking for ways to make things easier for you so that you could do the same thing without actually making it any tougher and making it easier. It is actually quiet easy. That is all what you have to do and piano becomes quite easy. Now this is how my outlook on pianos. It is easy. That is the very first thing I said when I said that teaching was less than both. Yeah, pianos are not hard, it is easy. I mean people like, “oh, really, it is easy?” And then people seem to like that because it makes it easier. There is a song that I could teach and like, “oh this is so hard, C major scale is actually quite complex which comprise of tones and some of tones and multiple.” (demonstration) But really, this is my very (demonstration) and add some keys. It is not really that difficult.
Now, another thing to make things a lot easier in your brain is some people actually do not think of every note individually. They will go, oh, (demonstration) it is like four (demonstration). So just think for every single note and it will go, oh no look at all these notes copyright. It is like a galaxy of stars and I am looking at each one and thinking, trying to separate my mind.
Now, also another thing is that (phone rings). Hold on. I am back. The phone decided to ring, so I had shut it off and take the messenger, whatever. Okay, now, another thing that people do that really screws them up is say, trying to play some big chords like (DM (demonstration). Yes, you could think of it like (demonstration), or you could use—now, this is called combining actions together. Now, how can I use my arm to get this key and this key? Is it possible that your hand is actually coming down (demonstration)?
Well, you can actually combine this much on. You can think of holding the (demonstration) and as you come up, you can push up on the keys. So it is just like you are going chord, chord with one motion. So by going like this, you are actually hitting two chords (demonstration) and then you just go (demonstration), so that is another motion, over here (demonstration) like that. I am coming into the cord and pushing over and then I am getting the next step (demonstration). So stop like that. You can actually—if you watch any great players like Vladimir Horowitz along with others like Rubenstein and Victor Horowitz and stuff like that. Watch their fingers and when they do difficult things that most people would find hard, their hands do not look like they are moving a lot, do they. Their hands are just kind of in the same spot and their fingers are just kind of going woosh, woosh, plays all over the keys.
Now, this is because they are combining multiple actions into one action. So as they are doing one swipe of something, they are actually getting two or three maybe four things done at one time. Now, that is what will make you a lot better of a player, because it takes out the difficultness of trying to hit all those keys. So whenever you find difficult spot or you just want to keep making things easier, think of how you could combine motions of notes together to create one motion doing multiple things.
Now, another thing you can think of is the keys are separate from your arms. The way your arms move actually determines the notes, but I think I will probably get that into another lesson because that is kind of way out and I still have not really figured that out yet. I just don’t sort of getting the grasp of how that would actually work.
