Meghan Carter: Most people would think of El Cajon California as a hot spot for poker but it’s more enough here to make anyone, want to unbutton or fuse button, put on their favorite chain and find a good poker table.
Yes, that’s right. Today, we’re looking at poker tables. I got an email from this guy Marty the other day, asking me how he could find a poker table that is so cool and makes his friends grin with envy. And it just so happens that one of the hottest poker table manufactures in the country is here in El Cajon. But I don’t think they want us to find them. They don’t even have a sign. I guess they are just that cool.
One look at the outside of dining and gaming tables and you would think I was walking into a ‘has been business,’ far past its prime. But don’t let appearances fool you. This gaming table sits at the top of the poker table marking building high end poker tables good enough for the likes of Meat Loaf, Michael Gordon and a whole group of other celebrities.
So, other zip code might not be the most desirable, what you find in their shop is. Isn’t this a really cool shop they have here? It’s really incredible! You know I’m a big fan of bringing the poker game home. Number one, you don’t have to feel intimidated when you’re walking at the casino. I’m always afraid I’m going to lose my shirt when I go there. Number two is that you can spend time with your friends. You can have a good lap. It’s a great bonding time when you have a home game. But the best reason is because when it’s your table it’s your rules. What could be better than that?
Well, for one having a high quality poker table that doesn’t fall apart or over when things get a bit rowdy. But finding a tough and beautiful poker table wasn’t easy. That is until Jeff Stein has the market. After failing to find a poker table that met his high standards, Jeff made his own with the commitment to use the finest materials and building techniques. Well, rather than letting the secrets of great poker tables die with him, I was hoping Jeff would share at least a little bit of his knowledge.
When you’re looking at a poker table and you see all these different pictures online. What are the features that make a poker table good?
Jeff: Okay, well there are several things too. If we’re talking more of the high end, the comfort is very important. Size is very important to me. Let’s say we’re going to get a round table instead of your Texas oval table like you see in casinos. If we’re going to get a round table, it should be more than 60 inches in diameter. I mean five feet across in any of direction because if it was over five feet, it’s hard to reach the center of the poke without having to get up.
Meghan Carter: And if you think a five-foot diameter poker table is small, it’s not. It can comfortably seat six to eight people. If your poker parties are a bit bigger than that, a Texas Holdem style table is best for you because they can comfortably seat eight to 10 people but don’t go any bigger than that.
Jeff: Yes, and you come online and see tables and go, “We make the biggest one.” And what is that mean? I mean, you make a big one but it’s not going to be good for me, why I’m actually sitting there. I know the thing is comfort. And in a lot of tables it should get—would have like a padded armrest and it’s like, to me, it look good without a padded armrest on it but that looks really good in picture—in an average Texas holdem game, you’re going to be there three or four hours. And that’s the average for our customer is through four hours and they say they’re playing it at a time.
Well, put your arm on solid wood for three or four hours, your elbows are going to be sored. You’re just going to want to lean off the table because it’s not comfortable. So, comfort is very important.
Meghan Carter: Because otherwise you cannot engage in the game.
Jeff: Exactly.
Meghan Carter: Because I even as I’m sitting with you right now it’s like, “these are nice.”
Jeff: Yes. You can completely lean on and relax. The pedestals are important, the folding legs, people go, “Oh! Fo
