Possible Childhood Asthma Triggers
Male: What are triggers, in your head, you’d be worried about that could trigger say wheezing attacks to some kids?
Alfin G. Vicencio: You know in small children, one of the most common triggers is simply viral infection. Kids get cold all the time. And somebody who has a pre-existing asthma, those simple viral infections can actually lead to an asthma attack. A lot of other things certain pollens, cockroaches, dust mites, a lot of environmental types of allergens, secondhand smoke, sometimes children are prone to exacerbations with changes in the weather.
Male: Can food allergy trigger asthma effects?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Sure.
Male: Any particular foods that you would be concerned about?
Alfin G. Vicencio: You know there are so many different things that children can be allergic to peanuts or something that can cause us significant allergy in children either with asthma or without asthma. But certainly things like that.
Male: How about milk?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Milk, true milk allergy is something that does exist and in true milk allergy, I guess it’s dependent on whether it’s true milk allergy versus something like lactose intolerance because those are usually GI manifestations.
Male: Well, some people take milk away that gets a lot of attacks. I don’t know, because to me, allergy is a kid that gets wheezing but there are some kids with increase mucous when they’re on milk and we stop it, it goes away and yet they’re going to have all the other classical sides of food allergy. So I don’t know who’s right here.
Alfin G. Vicencio: Yeah, I’m not sure either.
